Strange Sport of the Week: Bossaball
Bossaball. This sport was invented in Spain in 2003. Its like volleyball, if volleyball had trampolines and martial arts. This strange sport combines volleyball with elements of soccer, gymnastics, and footvolley.
Here’s how it works: The pitch is made up of trampolines and inflatables. The rules are similar to regular volleyball, only, you can use any part of your body to send the ball over the net. On your serve, if the ball hits the floor (the trampoline or the inflatable) you earn points. Three points for landing on the trampoline, one for the inflatable. The first team to score 25 points wins.
Possibly the best element to this game – even above the high flying acrobatics – are the referees. These “Samba Referees” are equipped with a whistle, microphones, various percussion instruments, and as every referee should have, a DJ set.
This sport hasn’t really taken on much of a following, maybe because the pitch resembles a moonbounce and might be a little expensive to install in your nearest recreation center. There still aren’t any Bossaball clubs in the U.S, but the Spain and Brazilian club teams travel and do demonstrations to promote the sport.
